The corpus names the tune Zhu Ying Tai Ling; the common text calls it Zhu Ying Tai Jin, two names for the same tune, with the subtitle Late Spring. In three places the corpus has slightly different words (the date in her heart, sobbing, taking the sorrow home); this page follows the common text: the day of his return, choking, and carrying the sorrow away. Editions of this lyric differ a good deal; for example, line eight is sometimes worded as "who will persuade the crying orioles to stop".

Background

This lyric speaks in the voice of a woman who misses her far-away love in late spring. The wind and rain do not stop, and petals fly everywhere. She longs for him to come back and even cries in her dreams. Xin Qiji mostly wrote bold, patriotic lyrics, but this one is soft and delicate. Some readers think it hides another meaning, using the woman's sorrow to show his worry about the country, but that is only one view. When it was written is not known.

The poet作者

Xin Qiji (1140–1207), also called Jiaxuan, came from Licheng, today's Jinan in Shandong. He was one of the most famous lyric poets of the Southern Song, often paired with Su Shi. As a young man he raised troops in the north to fight the Jin invaders, then came south. All his life he hoped to win back the lost land, but he was often given no real power. Most of his lyrics are bold and fiery, yet he could also write tender, delicate pieces like this one.

The mood意境

The first stanza is about the sorrow after parting. The split hairpin, the ferry and the misty willows are all pictures of saying goodbye. She dares not climb the tower to look far off, because every day brings wind and rain. Petals cover the ground and no one stops them, and the orioles keep singing, which only makes it worse. The second stanza has a lovely little action. She takes the flower from her hair and counts the petals one by one to work out when he will return. She pins it back, but cannot quite believe it, so she takes it down and counts again. This detail makes her longing feel alive. At night, under the dim lamp, she sobs in her dream and blames spring: you brought the sorrow, so why didn't you take it with you when you left? It sounds a little childish, but it is exactly what she truly feels.
