Background

At twenty-one, Xin Qiji joined an uprising against the Jin in the north. In 1162 the rebel leader Geng Jing was killed by a traitor, Zhang Anguo. Xin Qiji rode with some fifty men into a Jin camp of fifty thousand, caught the traitor alive, and brought him across the Yangtze to the Song court. He wrote this lyric late in life, while living in the countryside. A guest spoke with passion about winning glory, which reminded him of his own youth. The title says he wrote it in jest, laughing at himself. Sources differ on the exact year.

The poet作者

Xin Qiji (1140–1207), also called Jiaxuan, was a great Southern Song poet. He was born in the north, which the Jin had taken. In his early twenties he joined an uprising against the Jin and then came south to the Song. He wanted with all his heart to win back the north, but he was seldom given real power. From middle age he was dismissed again and again, and lived for many years in the Jiangxi countryside. His lyrics are bold and strong; he and Su Shi are named together as Su and Xin.

The mood意境

The first half is like a film. The young Xin Qiji leads ten thousand men, charges in a brocade coat, and crosses the river to the south. The Jin soldiers nervously ready their arrows at night, and the Song arrows whistle off at dawn. The scenes are fast, loud and full of fire. Then the second half slows down. He thinks back, then looks at himself now: his beard has turned white. The spring wind can turn the grass green, but it cannot dye a white beard black. The last two lines hurt the most. He wrote ten thousand words of plans to beat the Jin, but the court never used them. All they got him was a book on planting trees, and a life farming in the country. The title calls it a joke, but it is full of the grief and anger of a hero with no chance to fight.
