Background

This poem is usually dated to 761, when Du Fu lived in his thatched cottage in Chengdu. "Hua Qing" means Hua Jingding, a general in Chengdu; qing is a polite way to address someone. Hua Jingding had put down a revolt and won praise, but his soldiers also used it to rob ordinary people. He often held grand feasts at home with music. Du Fu wrote this poem for him.

The poet作者

Du Fu (712–770) was a great Tang poet, often called the Sage of Poetry. After the An Lushan Rebellion he wandered from place to place. Around 760 he built a thatched cottage in the western outskirts of Chengdu and lived there for a few years, a fairly settled time. He wrote many poems there, some about scenery and some about the country's affairs. This is one of them.

The mood意境

On the surface, this poem praises music. The first two lines show how lively and airy the music is: it plays every day, drifts far on the river wind, and floats into the clouds. The last two lines say it is so beautiful that it must be music of heaven, rarely heard on earth. But there is another way to read it. In old times, "heaven" could also mean the imperial palace, and some kinds of music were only for the emperor. One view says Hua Jingding, proud of his success, used the emperor's music at home, and Du Fu gently warned him through words of praise. Others think Du Fu was simply praising the music. Both readings make sense, and that is what makes this little poem so interesting to think about.
