Background

"Fu de" was a way of writing poems in old times. At a gathering, a theme was set first, and then everyone wrote a poem on it. Here the theme was "Evening Rain", and the poem was also used to see off a friend, Li Zhou. Some editions give the friend's name as Li Cao. The poem is set on the Yangtze at Jianye, today's Nanjing. We no longer know who Li Zhou was, or in what year the poem was written.

The poet作者

Wei Yingwu (about 737–about 791) came from Chang'an. As a young man he was a palace guard and lived wildly. Later he threw himself into study and served as governor of Chuzhou, Jiangzhou and Suzhou, so he is also called Wei Suzhou. His poems are calm and quiet, and he was very good at painting landscapes in words.

The mood意境

The theme of this poem is "Evening Rain", so nearly every line is about rain, yet the word itself hardly appears. The first line gives the drizzle on the river, and the second gives the evening bell, setting the time and place at once. Lines three and four are the cleverest. The sails are "heavy" because they are wet, and the birds are "slow" because they are wet. Rain is never named, but it is everywhere. Lines five and six look into the distance. The river mouth cannot be seen, and the far trees drip. Everything is blurry, like the empty feeling of saying goodbye. Only the last two lines speak of the parting: my tears mix with the threads of rain, and you cannot tell which is which.
