The corpus gives this as the first of three poems titled "Early Autumn", with the words "wěi yù lù", "fú yín hé" and "lǎo yān bō". The common text, as in Three Hundred Tang Poems, is titled simply "Early Autumn" and reads "qī yù lù", "fú jīn hé" and "dòng tíng bō", which are used here.

Background

This poem shows the sights and feelings of early autumn. It begins with the sound of a se and the west wind on a long night, moves to the tall trees and distant hills the next morning, and ends with a single falling leaf that tells the poet autumn has truly come. It borrows from two old books: the Huainanzi and Qu Yuan's poem "The Lady of the Xiang". When and where it was written is no longer known.

The poet作者

Xu Hun (about 791 to about 858) was a late Tang poet who served as a county magistrate and a prefect. He was best at regulated verse and loved to write about water, rain and the colors of hills. People joked that a thousand poems by Xu Hun are all wet. His collection is called the Dingmao Collection.

The mood意境

This poem feels like searching for autumn bit by bit. At night the poet first hears it: the cool notes of a se, and the west wind in the vines. Then he sees it: only a few fireflies are left, resting on the dew, and wild geese are already crossing the sky. In the morning the trees are still thick with leaves, as if summer has not left. But the sky is high and clear, and hill after hill appears in the distance. At last a single leaf falls, and he knows at once that autumn is here. He remembers Qu Yuan's autumn waves on Dongting Lake, and a gentle autumn mood rises in his heart. The poem never cries out in sadness. It uses sounds, light and a falling leaf to let you feel the season turning.
