Background

This poem shows a scene at Qingming. Around Qingming a fine rain often falls, and it is the time to sweep the graves of loved ones, so a traveler far from home feels even sadder. The poem is not in Du Mu's own collected works. It first appears in books of the Song dynasty, and later the Song anthology "Poems of a Thousand Poets" put it under Du Mu's name. So some say it is not by Du Mu, but textbooks usually give him as the author. The year it was written is not known.

The poet作者

Du Mu (803–852) was a poet of the late Tang. He and Li Shangyin are called the "Little Li and Du", after the great Li Bai and Du Fu. He was especially good at seven-character quatrains. His words are fresh and his pictures are clear, and with a few strokes he could bring a scene to life, as in "Mountain Walk" and "Spring South of the River".

The mood意境

The first line gives the weather: at Qingming, a fine rain keeps falling. The second line gives the people: travelers on the road are wet and cold, and they think of loved ones who have died, so sad they seem to lose their souls. The third line asks a question, and the mood shifts a little: let me find a tavern, rest my feet, and warm up with some wine. The last line is the most vivid. The herd boy says nothing; he just lifts his hand and points. Far off in the misty rain is a cloud of pinkish-white apricot blossoms, and in it, a village. The poem stops there. What the tavern looks like, whether the traveler goes, is left for us to imagine. The poem is easy to say aloud, and for centuries, every Qingming, people have remembered it.
