Background

Under Emperor Shunzong, Liu Zongyuan joined a reform led by Wang Shuwen and others, known as the Yongzhen Reform. It soon failed. In 805 he was sent away to Yongzhou, in today's Hunan, as a minor official with no real power. He lived there for about ten years. This poem is usually thought to come from those years. He often wandered in the hills and rivers to ease his sadness, and wrote many poems and essays about them.

The poet作者

Liu Zongyuan (773–819) was a Tang writer, one of the Eight Great Prose Masters of Tang and Song. After he was sent to Yongzhou, he wrote the famous Eight Records of Yongzhou and the poem "River Snow". The fishermen in his poems often carry his own shadow: lonely, proud, and longing to be free.

The mood意境

This poem is like a short film. At night the fisherman sleeps under the cliffs. At dawn he draws water, burns bamboo and cooks, and smoke rises. Then the scene changes: the mist clears, the sun comes up, and the man is gone. Just as we wonder where he went, the creak of an oar is heard, and all the hills and water turn a shining green. He has already rowed away. At the end the little boat drifts to the edge of the sky, and only white clouds float freely over the cliffs. The poet never says "I", yet we feel free, quiet and a little lonely. The Song poet Su Shi loved this poem, but thought the last two lines could be cut. People have argued ever since about whether they should stay.
