Background

"Waves Washing Sand" was a folk tune of the Tang. Liu Yuxi wrote nine poems to it, and this is the first. An old legend says the Yellow River is joined to the Milky Way in the sky. Someone once rode a raft up the river and floated all the way to the river of stars, where he met the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl. The poet uses this legend to write about the Yellow River. Scholars disagree about when the set was written.

The poet作者

Liu Yuxi (772–842) was a Tang poet and a close friend of Bai Juyi. People called him the Hero of Poetry. Because he took part in a reform, he was sent away to remote places for over twenty years, yet he stayed cheerful. He loved folk songs and wrote many fresh, easy poems in their style, such as his "Bamboo Branch Songs" and this set.

The mood意境

The first two lines show the Yellow River: bending again and again, carrying sand for ten thousand li, pushed by wind and waves, rolling in from the edge of the sky. Picture yourself on the bank, watching the muddy yellow water rush in from far away. Then the last two lines suddenly fly into the sky. If the river comes from the sky's edge, why not follow it all the way up to the Milky Way and visit the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl? The idea is bold and playful, as if the poet were saying, "I am not afraid of the long road. I want to go to the farthest, loveliest place." The poem feels grand, and light like a folk song.
