In the third line the source writes the character for wū, "to spoil", in an old variant form. The standard form is used here.

Background

The Terrace of Gathered Spirits was a hall Emperor Xuanzong built at the Huaqing Palace on Mount Li, for worshipping immortals. After Yang Guifei won the emperor's favor, her elder sisters were also given noble titles and grew very proud. Trusting in the emperor's favor, the Lady of Guo could ride her horse in and out of the palace as she liked. Zhang Hu wrote two poems on this terrace, and the second is about her. One view says Du Fu wrote it, under the title "The Lady of Guo", but most anthologies give it to Zhang Hu.

The poet作者

Zhang Hu (about 785–849) was a Tang poet. He never held an important post and liked to travel. He wrote many poems about the palace and about history. His "Palace Song", with the lines "home three thousand li away, twenty years in the deep palace", is very famous. When he wrote about people at court, he used few words, but they often carried a sting.

The mood意境

On the surface the poem praises the Lady of Guo: she is so beautiful she needs no makeup. But read closely and you hear mockery. By the rules, people had to enter the palace with great respect. Yet she rides her horse right through the gate at dawn. Meeting the emperor, one should dress with care. Yet she only brushes her brows a little, as if to say, "Even without makeup I am lovelier than anyone." The words "she even disliked" show all her pride. The poet never scolds her. He just paints her picture, and readers can see for themselves how far the emperor's favor had gone.
