Background

This lyric is about the joy of a spring outing on the east side of the city. The line about spring bustling on the red apricot branches made Song Qi so famous that people called him the Red Apricot Minister. We no longer know in which year it was written.

The poet作者

Song Qi (998–1061) was a Northern Song writer and historian. He and his elder brother Song Xiang passed the top exam in the same year and were called the Two Songs. He helped write the history book New Book of Tang, and rose to be Minister of Works. Few of his lyrics survive, and this one is the most famous.

The mood意境

The first half paints spring. East of the city the scenery grows lovelier. Fine ripples like silk welcome the boats. The willows are wrapped in light mist, the morning is just a little cool, and red apricot blossoms crowd the branches. The best part is the word nào, bustling. Flowers make no sound, yet the poet says spring is noisy. We seem to see trees full of red blossoms, hear bees humming, and feel spring rushing at us. The second half turns to feeling. Life is short and joy is rare, so rather than hold on to money, enjoy the good times. At the end he raises his cup and asks the setting sun to go down slowly, hoping to keep the lovely moment a little longer.
