Background

Lin Tui was a friend of the poet named Lin, who worked as a tuiguan, a local official who handled criminal cases. He had lived in the capital for years, spending his days drinking, gambling and visiting singing girls. Liu Kezhuang wrote this lyric to advise him, half as a joke. Stop wasting your life on pleasure, he says, and remember the northern lands taken by the Jin. That is why the title says teasing. We do not know the exact year it was written.

The poet作者

Liu Kezhuang (1187–1269), also called Houcun, was a poet of the late Southern Song. By his time the northern lands had been lost for many decades. His lyrics follow the style of Xin Qiji: bold, and often about the wish to win back the lost land.

The mood意境

The first half is like a portrait of the friend. Year after year he rides around the capital, treats the inn as home, drinks by day and gambles by night. His life is a mess. The second half begins by reasoning with him. A wife's true love is easy to see, but a singing girl's heart is hard to read, so why grieve over them? Then the last two lines rise high. A real man should look to the northwest, where the lost homeland waits to be won back. Do not cry by a bridge over singing girls. The title says it is a joke, and the start is light. But the end is serious. It is honest advice, and it also shows the poet's own love for his country.
