This poem is like a child seeing a goose for the first time. The three "goose!" words at the start sound like the bird's cry and also like an excited child shouting. At once we are standing by the pond. The second line shows the goose bending its long neck and calling to the sky, as if singing, with both sound and movement. The last two lines are about color: white feathers, green water, red feet, clear ripples. Each line holds two colors side by side, bright as a painting. "Float" shows the goose calm on top of the water. "Paddle" shows its feet busy underneath. One still, one moving, and the goose comes alive.
