Background

In this poem Jia Dao goes to visit his friend Li Ning, but finds him out, so he writes the poem at his door. We no longer know who Li Ning was; he was probably a hermit. There is a famous story about the line "a monk knocks at the door under the moon". Riding his donkey, Jia Dao kept trying to choose between "push" and "knock", and without noticing he bumped into the procession of the official Han Yu. Han Yu thought for a moment and said "knock" was better. That is where the Chinese word tuī qiāo, "push and knock", meaning to weigh one's words carefully, comes from. But the story was written down later and may not be wholly true.

The poet作者

Jia Dao (779–843) was a Tang poet. As a young man he became a Buddhist monk, then later returned to ordinary life to sit the imperial exams, but he never did well. He worked very hard on his poems, weighing every word. He once said it took him three years to get two lines right. People paired him with the poet Meng Jiao, calling Meng's poems "cold" and Jia's "lean".

The mood意境

The most famous lines are the third and fourth. The night is still. The birds are asleep. Under the moon, a monk knocks softly at a door. The word "knock" adds a small sound, a few taps, and that makes the night feel even quieter. The word "push" would not do this. Lines five and six show the way back. After the bridge, the fields change color. Clouds drift, and the rocks seem to move with them. The last two lines say: I will come again, and I will not forget my promise. The whole poem is quiet and calm, and shows how lovely a hermit's life can be.
