Background

The title means "To Someone", a poem sent to a particular person. It is usually thought he wrote it to a woman he once loved but had to part from. They could no longer meet, so he put his longing into a poem and sent it to her. Who she was and when it was written are no longer known.

The poet作者

Zhang Bi was a poet and lyric writer of the late Tang and the Five Dynasties. Little is known about his life. One view says he later served as an official in the Southern Tang. Few of his poems survive, and some of his lyrics are in the collection "Among the Flowers". This poem was chosen for "Three Hundred Tang Poems" and is his best-known work.

The mood意境

The poem begins with a dream. He cannot see her while awake, so he looks for her in a dream. Everything in the dream is clear: the little walkway winding about, the curving rail slanting along, all places they once walked together. But the dream never says he finds her. It is as if she is no longer there. The last two lines turn to the moon. In the spring courtyard, moonlight falls on the fallen flowers covering the ground. The poet says only the moon still cares, still shining there for him. The moon remembers, but what about her? He asks without saying it. Longing and a quiet hurt are both hidden inside, which makes the poem beautiful and sad.
