Background

This lyric is set in early spring and looks back on a love that came to nothing. The poet and a woman once met at a party with singing and spent time together by candlelight. They loved each other, but never married. Now he faces the spring alone, remembers the past, and fears time slipping away. We do not know the year it was written or who the woman was.

The poet作者

Shi Dazu, also called Bangqing or Meixi, came from Bian, today's Kaifeng in Henan. He was a Southern Song lyric poet; his birth and death years are not known. He never passed the top state exam. Later he worked as a secretary for the powerful minister Han Tuozhou and was much trusted. When Han was killed, Shi was punished with him and sent into exile. He was best at lyrics about things, written with fine, careful detail. His collection is "Lyrics of Meixi".

The mood意境

The opening is unusual. The willows are so thick they lock in the oriole's soul, and the flowers toss in the wind and wake the butterflies from their dreams. Spring is lovely, yet the poet says sorrow has turned his hair white, and he must even hide his tears. Afraid of time passing, he peeks at the early spring rain and the half-open plum blossoms, which remind him of a woman's charm, like Lady Xu's half-face make-up. The second stanza goes back to the past. Love grew beside the singing, scent drifted under the candles, but the fine loom never wove a pair of mandarin ducks: the two never ended up together. Back then he was drunk and needed help to walk, the moon leaned on the wall, and anyone dared to say bold things. Now, late at night, they can only go over those words alone. The feelings are hidden in scenery and old stories, so the lyric rewards slow reading.
