Background

This lyric shows the Northern Song capital, Bianjing (today's Kaifeng in Henan), at Qingming. "Written at imperial command" means the emperor asked for it. Under Emperor Huizong, Moqi Yong worked at the Dasheng Bureau, the court office in charge of music, and often wrote lyrics for festivals. The lyric first shows spring in the palace gardens, then people of the capital on their spring outings, and last the palace handing out new fire at Cold Food and Qingming, and the officials' holiday. Every part of it praises a time of peace.

The poet作者

Moqi Yong (dates unknown) had the two-character surname Moqi. He was a lyric poet of the late Northern Song. He knew music very well. He did poorly in the exams when young, and later wrote lyrics and music for the court at the Dasheng Bureau. His lyrics care about strict form and beautiful sound. This "Santai" is a very long lyric in three stanzas, lively and neatly built.

The mood意境

This lyric is like a long scroll painting of Qingming customs. The first stanza is in the palace. At dawn the pear blossoms hold moonlight and the crabapples hold raindrops. There is so much spring that it cannot be kept in, and it flows out of the city with the canal water. The second stanza moves outside. Orioles sing, swallows dart, girls swing and play the grass game, and young men ride out into the fields. In the evening they come back covered in petals and willow fluff. The third stanza returns to the palace. After the Cold Food day the palace sends out new fire, its smoke drifts into the ministers' homes, the gates open, and everyone rests. As you read, picture one warm spring day, from morning to night, from the palace to the streets, full of flowers, birdsong and laughter. It was written for the emperor, so it is especially bright and joyful.
