Underlined words have notes: tap one. The Pinyin button below shows or hides all pinyin. 一 and 不 are marked with the tone you actually say.

The data gives the second line as "in autumn it grows on its old branches". Common editions today read "in spring, how many sprigs has it grown?", which is the text used here. Some editions also have the third line as "I urge you not to pick them".

Background

This poem was written to a friend, using red beans to say "I miss you." When it was written is not known. Some old books title it "For Li Guinian, on the River", saying it was written for Li Guinian, a famous Tang singer. The story goes that later, when Li drifted to the south, he often sang this poem. This account cannot be fully confirmed. Red beans grow in the south, while Wang Wei lived mostly in the north around Chang'an, which is why the poem says they grow in the south.

The poet作者

Wang Wei (701–761; some say 699–761) was a famous Tang poet, and also a painter and musician. His poems about hills and streams are calm and clean. The Song writer Su Shi said there were paintings in his poems and poems in his paintings. In later life he followed Buddhism and liked a quiet life in the hills.

The mood意境

Red beans are bright red and shiny. People of old called them longing seeds. One legend says they grew from the tears of someone crying for a loved one far away. The poet does not say "I miss you" directly. He only asks gently: how many new sprigs have the southern red beans grown this spring? Then he tells his friend to pick plenty, since they bring friends to mind best of all. He talks about beans, but really he is handing his feelings to the little red seeds. The words are simple, almost casual, yet the feeling runs deep, and that is why people have sung it for over a thousand years.
