Background

This is the second of Liu Yuxi's "Five Poems on Jinling". Jinling is today's Nanjing, once the capital of six dynasties. In a short preface, Liu Yuxi wrote that he had never visited Jinling as a young man. Later, while he was prefect of Hezhou, today's He County in Anhui, a guest showed him some poems on Jinling, and he wrote five of his own. The set is usually dated to about 825–826.

The poet作者

Liu Yuxi (772–842) was a Tang poet known as the Hero of Poetry. After a political reform he joined failed, he was sent to posts far from the capital for more than twenty years and saw much rise and fall. His poems on history often draw a big truth out of a small scene, and this is a famous example.

The mood意境

The first two lines show the place today. Zhuque Bridge and Black Robe Lane were once the liveliest, grandest places in the city. Now wild grass and flowers grow by the bridge, and only the slanting evening sun lights the lane. It is quiet and empty. The last two lines, about swallows, are very clever. Swallows return to the same places every year to nest. They seem to be the same "swallows before the halls of the Wangs and Xies", but those great mansions are long gone, and ordinary families live there now. The swallows have not changed; the human world has. The poet never says "how much the world has changed". He just lets us watch a swallow fly into an ordinary home, and we feel hundreds of years of rise and fall slip away.
