shān山jū居qiū秋míng暝

In the title, míng means dusk. In his middle years Wang Wei had a country house at Wangchuan, below the Zhongnan Mountains near Chang'an. He often held office and at the same time lived a quiet life in the hills. The poem is usually taken to describe an autumn evening after rain during those days in the mountains. We cannot say in which year it was written.

题目里的“暝”是傍晚、天黑的意思。王维中年以后，在长安附近的终南山下有一处辋川别墅，常常一边做官，一边在山里过隐居的日子。一般认为这首诗写的就是他隐居山中时，一个秋天雨后的傍晚。具体写在哪一年，已经说不清了。

Wang Wei (701–761, or by another account 699–761), courtesy name Mojie, was a Tang poet, painter and musician. He was a Buddhist and is called the Buddha of Poetry. He was a master of mountain and country scenes. Su Shi said there were paintings in his poems and poems in his paintings. This poem is like a painting of the mountains in autumn.

王维（701—761，一说699—761），字摩诘，唐代诗人，也是画家和音乐家。他信佛，被称为“诗佛”。他特别会写山水田园，苏轼说他“诗中有画，画中有诗”。这首诗就像一幅山中秋景图。

After rain the mountains are very clean, and the air is cool. Moonlight falls between the pines, and a spring tinkles over the stones. It is a quiet picture. Then sound and people come in. Girls laugh in the bamboo. The lotus leaves move, and a fishing boat appears. The poet hears the sound and sees the movement first, and only then the people, just as it happens in real life. Life in the hills is simple and happy. The last two lines turn around an old poem that said the noble son should come home, because one cannot stay long in the mountains. Wang Wei says the opposite: never mind that spring's flowers are gone; in autumn hills this lovely, I am glad to stay.

雨后的山特别干净，空气也特别清凉。月光照在松树间，泉水在石头上叮叮咚咚地流，这是一幅安静的画。接着画里有了声音和人：竹林里传来姑娘们的说笑，荷叶一动，渔船划了出来。诗人先听到声音、看到动静，后才看见人，写得很自然。山里的人生活得简单快乐。最后两句化用了古诗“王孙归来，山中不可久留”的意思，反过来说：春天的花谢了也没关系，这么美的秋山，我愿意留下来。
