Background

Li He wrote a set of twenty-three Horse Poems, and this is the fifth. Each one is about a horse, but really about a person. A fine horse needs someone who knows its worth before it can run in battle. A gifted person also needs to be given a chance before he can do great things. Li He was very talented but never got that chance, so he poured his wishes and his frustration into these poems. Sources differ on the exact year they were written.

The poet作者

Li He (790–816), also called Changji, was a Tang poet. His imagination was strange and his words were fresh, so people called him the Ghost of Poetry. His father's name sounded like the word for the top civil exam, and people said it would be disrespectful for him to take it, so he never could. He never got the career he hoped for and died at twenty-six.

The mood意境

The first two lines paint a frontier night. Moonlight falls on the desert and the sand looks as white as snow. Over the Yanshan mountains the moon is curved like a hook, or like a curved sword. This is a place for galloping horses and brave deeds. The last two lines are the horse speaking from its heart: when will I wear a golden bridle and run freely across the autumn fields? In the last line you can almost hear the hooves, fast and light. The horse longs to be put to use, and so does the poet. Picture a fine horse gazing into the distance, waiting for the moment to set off.
