Underlined words have notes: tap one. The Pinyin button below shows or hides all pinyin. 一 and 不 are marked with the tone you actually say.字下有虚线的,点开有注释。下方的“拼音”按钮可以显示或隐藏全部拼音。“一”“不”标的是实际读出来的变调。

The corpus heads it with two spellings of the tune name. Common editions use only the tune name Ta Suo Xing, so the first line is added here as the title, as usual.

资料库题作“蹋莎行·踏莎行”,通行本只用词牌“踏莎行”,这里按习惯加上首句作题目。

Background创作背景

From the pomegranate flowers, the mugwort and the colored thread on the wrist, we can tell this ci was written around the Duanwu festival. The poet takes a nap at noon and dreams of a woman he has long been parted from. The first stanza is almost all what he sees of her in the dream. The second stanza is his longing after he wakes. The ci does not say who she was. One reading says she was a concubine of his in Suzhou who later left him.

从石榴花、艾枝、手腕上的彩丝来看,这首词写在端午节前后。词人中午睡了一觉,梦见了一位分别已久的女子。上片几乎都是梦中看到的她,下片写梦醒以后的思念。这位女子是谁,词里没有说。一说是吴文英在苏州时的一位姬妾,后来离开了他。

The poet作者

Wu Wenying (about 1200 to about 1260), also called Mengchuang, was a Southern Song ci poet. He never held high office and mostly worked as an assistant to officials around Suzhou and Hangzhou. His ci use rich, polished words and pack many pictures close together, like layers of woven brocade. Sometimes they are hard to follow. He wrote many ci missing a lost love, and this is one of them.

吴文英(约1200—约1260),号梦窗,南宋词人。他一生没有做大官,多在苏州、杭州一带给官员做幕僚。他的词用字精美,画面很密,像一层层织在一起的锦缎,有时读起来不太好懂。他写过许多怀念旧情人的词,这首就是其中之一。

The mood意境

The first stanza is a beautiful dream. The poet moves from her skin to her lips, her collar, her skirt and her hair, as if a camera comes closer and closer, until we can even smell the rouge. But the words for folded for nothing and sad show her loneliness: no one wears the dancing skirt, and her hair is untidy. The second stanza turns: the dream crossed a thousand mountains, yet only a moment passed. The farther the dream went, the emptier waking feels. The thread on her wrist is loose, which means she has grown thin. At the end she is across the river in the rain, and the evening wind stirs the leaves. It is early summer at Duanwu, yet in his heart it is already autumn.
