Background

This is a lyric about an object: the title is "The New Moon", the thin crescent that has just appeared. It is usually thought to date from around the fall of the Southern Song. Through the new moon the poet shows his feelings for his lost country. The new moon will slowly grow round, but a broken land is hard to mend. The palace pond and the home hills in the lyric both bring to mind the homeland that was lost. The exact year is no longer known.

The poet作者

Wang Yisun, also called Bishan, came from Kuaiji, today's Shaoxing in Zhejiang. He lived at the end of the Song and the start of the Yuan, and his dates are not known. He saw the Southern Song fall. He often wrote lyrics back and forth with poets such as Zhou Mi and Zhang Yan. He was best at lyrics about objects: while describing one thing, he often hid his longing for the lost country. His collection is called Beyond the Flowers.

The mood意境

The first stanza is lovely, almost a painting. A thin new moon hangs over the willows, its pale light slips through the flowers, and women bow to it and make wishes. The poet compares the moon to an eyebrow not yet finished, and to a small silver hook on a curtain. Both pictures are light and sweet. Yet the words "sorrow of parting" and "autumn chill" already let in a cold breath. The second stanza suddenly grows heavy. The moon has waxed and waned forever, so there is no need to ask about it. But broken things in the human world are like trying to mend the moon with a jade axe: they cannot be fixed. The palace pond is still there, yet no one comes to write about the moonlight anymore. At last he says: even if I wait until the full moon shines in at my window, the hills and rivers beyond the clouds will only grow old under its light. From a sweet little moon to a loss that cannot be undone, this is the magic of a lyric that speaks its heart through an object.
