In line three the corpus writes xūn with the character for smoking or fuming. Common editions use the character that means fragrance: the grass gives off a sweet smell. The two were mixed up in conversion.

The mood意境

The first stanza shows a man setting out. Plum blossoms have fallen, willow leaves are fresh, the grass smells sweet, the wind is warm. It should be a happy time. But the farther he goes, the more his sorrow grows, flowing on like a spring river. Comparing sorrow, which we cannot see, to a spring river, which we can, makes it easy to feel. The second stanza turns to the woman. She weeps and wants to climb the tower to look for him, but tells herself not to. All she would see is the spring hills at the end of the fields, and he is beyond even those hills, out of sight. Each place is farther than the last, and the longing grows deeper each time.
