The corpus writes the first character of the second line in its old form, which the machine conversion kept; textbooks use the modern form, chén. The corpus also puts lines three and four on one line; here each sentence has its own line.

Background

This lyric is usually thought to be from Li Qingzhao's girlhood. It recalls an outing by a creek. As a girl she lived in Jinan in Shandong and in the Northern Song capital, Bianjing (today's Kaifeng in Henan). Her family was well-off and her life was happy and carefree. The exact year, and where the creek pavilion was, can no longer be known.

The mood意境

This little lyric is like a short video. It opens with a memory: that day at the creek pavilion, playing until sunset, a little wine, so happy she could hardly find the way home. Then the small boat heads back. It is getting dark, and by mistake it drifts deep into the lotus, with tall leaves and flowers all around. Now they are in a hurry: "Row hard! Row hard!" Called out twice in a row, you can almost hear the splash of the oars and the girls laughing. At the end a whole flock of water birds bursts up into the air in fright. In just thirty-three characters, the lyric brings to life a girl's innocence and fun and the beauty of nature.
