The commonly taught text writes the second character of line one in its modern form, chén, meaning "sinking". The corpus uses an older form of the same character, left over from the machine conversion. The sound and meaning are the same.

Background

This lyric is usually thought to have been written when Zhou Bangyan was young, in Bianjing, today's Kaifeng in Henan, the capital of the Northern Song. In the Yuanfeng years of Emperor Shenzong, around the 1080s, he came to study at the Imperial Academy in the capital, later worked there, and lived in the city for many years. One summer morning he saw lotus leaves after rain and thought of the lotus ponds of home in the south, so he wrote this lyric. Sources differ on the exact year.

He knew music deeply, wrote tunes himself, and worked at the court's music office, the Dasheng Bureau. His lyrics pay close attention to sound and use finely chosen words, and they had a big influence on later Southern Song poets.

The mood意境

The first stanza is a summer morning. Agarwood burns indoors to drive away the stuffy heat. Outside, birds chatter as if saying: the sun is out! The most famous lines are the three about lotus leaves. The sun comes up and dries the raindrops on the leaves; on the water the leaves are clean and round, and one by one they rise up in the breeze. The word "rise" shows how tall and straight they stand, as if they have just woken and stretched. The scholar Wang Guowei said these lines truly catch the spirit of the lotus. The second stanza moves from the lotus to home. His home is in the south, but he has stayed long in the capital. He wonders if the fishermen at home still remember him. In the end he can only row a little boat in his dream, back to the shore full of lotus flowers. The scenery is fresh, and the homesickness is gentle but true.
