How to read it读音

谩màn: Here it is read màn, the same as "in vain". Read mán it means "to deceive", which is not the sense here.谩，这里读 màn，同“漫”，意思是“白白地、徒然”。读 mán 时是“欺骗”的意思，不是这里的用法。
薄bó: In bó xìng, "heartless", it is read bó.薄幸的“薄”读 bó。

Background创作背景

This lyric is usually thought to have been written when Qin Guan was leaving Kuaiji, today's Shaoxing in Zhejiang, by boat after a stay there, around the end of 1079. Before he left, he said a sad goodbye to a singing girl he loved, and wrote these words. The opening phrase about clouds brushed on the hills was so admired that people called him "Scholar Qin of the brushed clouds".

一般认为，这首词是秦观在会稽（今浙江绍兴）住了一段时间后，要坐船离开时写的，时间大约在宋神宗元丰二年（1079年）年底。临走时，他和一位相好的歌女依依惜别，写下了这首词。开头“山抹微云”写得特别好，人们因此叫他“山抹微云秦学士”。

The poet作者

Qin Guan (1049–1100), also called Shaoyou, was a Northern Song poet and a student of Su Shi, one of the "Four Scholars of the Su School". His lyrics use fine, clear words and gentle feelings, often about parting and sadness. He is a leading poet of the delicate style. Su Shi greatly admired his talent.

秦观（1049—1100），字少游，北宋词人，是苏轼的学生，“苏门四学士”之一。他的词语言清丽，感情细腻，多写离别和伤感，是婉约词的代表作家。苏轼很喜欢他的才华。

The mood意境

The first three lines are like a pale ink painting: thin clouds brushed on the hills, dry grass reaching the sky, the horn on the gate tower falling quiet. The words "brushed" and "joined" make the far view light and distant. The boat is about to leave, so the two stop for one cup of parting wine. Looking back on the past, he sees only mist. Then comes the famous scene: beyond the setting sun, winter crows dot the sky, and a stream winds round a lonely village. It is cold and empty, just like his heart. The second stanza shows the parting itself: she unties her scent pouch, and they part their sashes. He mocks himself for being left with nothing but a name for heartlessness, and his sleeves are wet with tears. At the end the boat is far away. He looks back, but the city is gone, and only the lamps of dusk remain. Scene and feeling are woven together, and the lyric grows darker and sadder as it goes.
