Background

This lyric uses the legend of the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl to write about love. In the legend, the two lovers are kept apart by the Milky Way. Only once a year, on the seventh day of the seventh month, do magpies build a bridge so they can meet. That day is Qixi. We no longer know in which year this lyric was written.

The poet作者

Qin Guan (1049–1100), also called Qin Shaoyou, was a Northern Song poet and a student of Su Shi, one of the Four Scholars of Su's school. His lyrics are gentle and delicate, often about love and parting. He is a leading poet of the graceful school, poets who wrote in a soft, quiet style. This is one of his best-known lyrics.

06

The mood意境

The first half shows the Qixi night sky. Thin clouds change their patterns, stars shine with sorrow, and the Weaver Girl quietly crosses the river. Meeting only once a year sounds sad. But the poet says this one meeting is worth more than countless meetings on earth. The second half says the meeting is short, like a dream, and on the way back they cannot bear to look behind them. Then the last two lines turn the sadness around. If love truly lasts for ever, why must two people be side by side every day? Most Qixi poems dwell on the lovers' pain. This one shows love that is firm and open-hearted, and that is why people have loved it for a thousand years.
