Background

In the spring of 737, Cui Xiyi, a frontier commander in the Hexi region, defeated the Tibetan army. Emperor Xuanzong sent Wang Wei, then a censor, to the frontier to comfort the troops and look into the army's affairs. He later stayed on in Liangzhou for a while as an aide to the commander. This poem records the frontier scenery he saw on the way. One view holds that the mission was also a way of pushing him out of the court.

The poet作者

Wang Wei (701–761, or by another account 699–761) was a great Tang poet, painter and musician, called the Buddha of Poetry. Su Shi said there were "paintings in his poems". He was best at poems of hills, fields and streams. This one is about the frontier, yet it too reads like a painting.

The mood意境

"Over the vast desert a single column of smoke rises straight; over the long river the setting sun is round" are the most famous lines ever written about the frontier. Picture it: endless yellow sand, no wind at all, one thin line of smoke going straight up into the sky. Far off, a long river, and the sun sinking, big, round and red above the water. The words "straight" and "round" are very simple, like drawing one line and one circle, yet they capture how wide, quiet and grand the desert is. Wang Wei also compares himself to blowing tumbleweed and to geese flying north, which hints at a traveller's loneliness. At the end he reaches Xiao Pass and learns that the commander is still farther away at the front, so you can feel how remote the frontier is.
