Background

In 805 Liu Yuxi took part in a movement to reform the government. When it failed, he was sent away to Langzhou, today's Changde in Hunan, as a minor official, and stayed for ten years. Most people think he wrote this poem there. Being sent so far away should have made him miserable. Yet he wrote this cheerful, high-spirited poem about autumn.

The poet作者

Liu Yuxi (772–842) was a Tang poet. He was sent away from the capital again and again, and spent more than twenty years far from it. Yet he stayed cheerful and strong and never gave up. Bai Juyi called him a hero of poetry. The two were good friends and often exchanged poems.

The mood意境

Many poets sigh as soon as they write about autumn. The plants wither, the weather turns cold, and it is all so sad. Liu Yuxi's first line states this common view, and his second line at once disagrees: I say autumn is better than spring! Why? The last two lines give a picture. The autumn sky is high and blue, and a white crane breaks through the clouds and flies straight up. Watching it, the poet's heart flies up into the sky too. The crane is like the poet himself, who refuses to bow his head. Reading this poem, you feel a force lifting you up: however hard life is, you can still look up at the sky.
