The corpus uses several old or variant character forms, here written in standard simplified form: jiàn (sword), xiān (immortal), zhēng (summon), zhān (felt) and yán (eaves). In line 40 the corpus has zhī (respectfully), a slip in the machine conversion; the original character means 'only', and the common text writes zhǐ (only). In line 64 the corpus writes biàn with the 'distinguish' character; the common text uses the 'debate' character.

Background

The Stone Drums are ten drum-shaped stones found in the early Tang near today's Baoji in Shaanxi. They are carved with very old writing, called the Stone Drum script. Han Yu believed they were made in the time of King Xuan of Zhou; most scholars today think they are carvings from the state of Qin in the Spring and Autumn or Warring States period. In 806, when Han Yu was an Erudite at the national academy, he asked for the drums to be moved to the Imperial Academy for safekeeping, but nothing was done. Later his friend Zhang brought him a rubbing of the writing and asked for a poem, and he wrote this long one. Because the poem says 'six years I have looked west', it is usually dated to around 811. Today the drums are kept in the Palace Museum in Beijing.

The poet作者

Han Yu (768–824), also called Han Tuizhi, was a Tang writer and the first of the Eight Great Prose Masters of Tang and Song. He urged people to write plain, strong prose like the ancients, not just pretty words. His poems, too, love rare words, hard-edged lines and long arguments. The chain of strange comparisons in this poem is his style. He honored Confucian learning, so he cared deeply about ancient relics like the Stone Drums.

The mood意境

This poem is like a long essay written in verse, in three parts. The first tells where the drums came from: King Xuan of Zhou hunted and won glory, stone was cut and carved, and the drums stood in the wild through wind and rain, as if guarded by spirits. The second part describes the writing. Han Yu piles up comparisons: the strokes are like dragons cut apart, like soaring phoenixes, like crossing coral trees, like golden ropes and iron chains. They let us 'see' the power and life of the old script. Then he complains that Confucius left it out of the Book of Songs. The third part is about himself. He once tried to move the drums to the academy to protect them, but the high officials dragged their feet, and the drums were left for herd boys to strike and oxen to rub. Here you can feel the worry and heartache of someone who loves old things and watches a treasure being ruined. The last line, 'Alas, my wish will come to nothing', is one long sigh.
