Background

"The Ninth" means the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, the Double Ninth Festival. On this day people climbed high and drank chrysanthemum wine. The Terrace for Watching Immortals was near today's Sanmenxia in Henan. Legend says Emperor Wen of Han built it to honor the sage Heshang Gong. On the festival, Cui Shu climbed the terrace and looked at the hills and rivers around. Thinking of the immortals and wise men of old, he wrote this poem for the local magistrate, Liu Rong. Míng fǔ was a polite name for a county magistrate in the Tang. We do not know which year it was written.

The poet作者

Cui Shu was a High Tang poet. We do not know when he was born, and he died around 739. Records say he came first in the top civil exam in the Kaiyuan years, but sadly he died not long after. Few of his poems survive, and this Double Ninth poem was chosen for the Three Hundred Tang Poems.

The mood意境

The poem starts with the past: a terrace built by an emperor long ago, which the poet climbs today in the dawn light. At once time feels very long. Lines three and four show the wide view from the top. To the north are the clouds and hills of the Three Jin; to the east, wind and rain over the two peaks. North and east together make the scene feel vast. Lines five and six go back to old legends. Yin Xi, who knew Laozi for a sage, is gone. The old man by the river who taught the emperor never came back. The immortals and wise men cannot be found. The last two lines turn: since we cannot find immortals, let us find this magistrate, who is like Tao Yuanming, and drink chrysanthemum wine together. From thinking of the past to enjoying the present, from loneliness to joy, the poem moves naturally and freely.
