The corpus uses older forms of the characters for pacing to and fro and for crow; common editions use the modern forms, with the same meaning. The poem also appears as the third of Five Autumn Poems of the Changxin Palace, and some editions begin line 2 slightly differently.

Background

This poem borrows a Han story. Under Emperor Cheng of Han, Lady Ban was talented and good. Later the emperor fell for the sisters Zhao Feiyan and lost interest in her. She asked to go serve the empress dowager in the Changxin Palace, and lived there alone. Tang poets often used her story to write about lonely palace women. This is one of Wang Changling's five Autumn Poems of the Changxin Palace. The year it was written is not known.

The poet作者

Wang Changling (about 698 to about 757) was a Tang poet known as the master of the seven-character quatrain. Besides frontier poems, he wrote many palace laments, poems about the sorrow of women at court. They are quiet and delicate.

The mood意境

The best part is the third and fourth lines. A crow is black and plain, and she is fair and lovely. How could a crow be worth more? Yet the crow can fly over from the Zhaoyang Hall, where the emperor is, as if still carrying its sunlight. She will never see the emperor again. The words "not as good as" hold all her hurt and sorrow. The first two lines paint a clear picture too. At dawn she sweeps, and then, with nothing to do, she paces with a round fan. The fan reminds us of a fan put away in autumn, just as she has been put aside.
