Old books write the character for wild goose in a different, older form. It is the same word. Today's textbooks use the standard form.

Background

This is the third of Lu Lun's six Frontier Songs written in reply to an official named Zhang. In the Tang there was often fighting on the northern frontier. The poem shows a snowy night: the enemy chief flees in the dark, and the Tang soldiers get ready to chase him. Chanyu, the old title of the Xiongnu chiefs in the Han dynasty, is borrowed here to mean the enemy of the poet's own time.

The poet作者

Lu Lun was a Tang poet, one of the Ten Talents of the Dali era. His exact dates are not known; he lived in the second half of the eighth century. He served in the army and saw the snow and wind of the frontier and the lives of the soldiers. His frontier poems are short and strong. This one and the one before it, which begins with dark woods and startled grass, are both in school textbooks.

The mood意境

The first line paints the night. There is no moon, it is very dark, and the wild geese are startled into the sky. Why are they startled? The second line tells us: the enemy chief is sneaking away in the dark. In the third line, the general is about to lead his light horsemen after him. The last line does not say whether they catch him. It gives one picture: in no time, heavy snow covers their bows and swords. It is so cold and the snow is so thick, yet the soldiers will still ride out. The picture stops just before they set off. We feel the cold, and we feel their courage.
