Background

Lu Lun wrote a set of six Frontier Songs in reply to poems by a high official named Zhang, whose title was Puye. This is the second. Writing a poem to answer someone else's poem was common. One view says this Zhang was Zhang Yanshang. The poem borrows a story about Li Guang, a famous general of the Han dynasty. Out hunting, Li Guang saw a rock in the grass and took it for a tiger. He shot it, and the arrowhead went all the way into the rock.

The poet作者

Lu Lun was a Tang poet, one of the Ten Talents of the Dali era. His exact dates are not known; he lived in the second half of the eighth century. He once held a post in the army and knew camp life well, so his poems about the frontier are full of strength. This set of Frontier Songs is about generals and soldiers, and it reads with great force.

The mood意境

The first line sets the scene. The woods are dark at night, and a gust of wind shakes the grass, as if a tiger is about to leap out. The second line shows the general. Calm and steady, he draws his bow and shoots. What did he hit? The poem does not say yet. In the third line it is dawn, and they go to find the arrow. The fourth line gives the answer: the arrow is buried deep in a rock! Rock is so hard, yet the arrow went in. Just think how strong the general must be. The poet does not praise him directly. He lets the result speak, and gives us a surprise.
