Background创作背景

This lyric is usually thought to be one of Li Qingzhao's early works. It is set on a spring morning. Wind and rain had blown all night, and she worried that the crabapple flowers in the garden had been knocked down. The first thing she did on waking was to ask the maid about them. The exact year is unknown. The lyric became famous as soon as it was known, and the four words "green plump, red thin" were especially praised.

这首词一般认为是李清照早年的作品，写的是一个春天的早晨。前一夜风雨交加，她担心院子里的海棠花被吹落，醒来第一件事就是问侍女海棠花怎么样了。写作的具体年份不详。这首词一传出来就很有名，“绿肥红瘦”这四个字尤其受人称赞。

The poet作者

Li Qingzhao (1084–about 1155), who called herself the Lay Buddhist of Yi'an, was the most famous woman poet of the Song. She noticed small things and could turn plain words into fresh, surprising lines. This lyric comes from the happy, settled first half of her life, with a touch of a young woman's charm and a sadness at spring passing.

李清照（1084—约1155），号易安居士，宋代最有名的女词人。她心思细腻，善于用平常的话写出新奇的句子。这首词写于她生活安定美满的前半生，带着一点少女的娇气和惜春的愁思。

The mood意境

This lyric is like a little conversation. After a night of wind and rain, the poet wakes still a bit tipsy, and the first thing on her mind is the crabapple flowers. The maid says casually, "The crabapple is just the same." The poet does not believe it. She says twice, "Don't you know? Don't you know?" as if to say, "You didn't look carefully!" After such a night, the leaves must be thicker and many flowers must have fallen. "Green plump, red thin" describes leaves and flowers as if they were people getting fatter or thinner, which is fresh and vivid. One person careless, one careful: in a few lines the lyric shows her love for the flowers and a gentle sadness that spring is ending.
