Background

This poem uses a Yuefu song title. It shows a woman playing the zheng alone on an autumn night. The one she loves is not with her, so she does not want to go back to her empty room. Old books disagree on the author. "Ten Thousand Tang Quatrains" and the Wang Ya section of the "Complete Tang Poems" name Wang Ya. The "Yuefu Poetry Collection" and "Three Hundred Tang Poems" name Wang Wei. "Records of Tang Poetry" says Zhang Zhongsu. This page follows Wang Ya. When it was written is unknown.

The poet作者

Wang Ya (died 835) was a Tang poet who rose to chancellor. In 835 came the Sweet Dew Incident, when officials plotted to remove the powerful palace eunuchs and failed. Wang Ya was killed. He wrote many short palace poems and Yuefu songs in fresh, clear language.

The mood意境

Not one word says "I miss him", yet longing is everywhere. The first line sets the scene: the moon has just risen and the dew is light. It is an early autumn night. In the second line her clothes feel thin, but she does not bother to change, so her mind is elsewhere. In the third line it is late, and she keeps playing over and over. Only the last line gives the reason: she is afraid to go back to the empty room, where she would feel even lonelier. She is not playing to make lovely music, but to pass the lonely hours. Picture a figure in the moonlight, and the music going on deep into the night.
