Background

Jia Yi was a brilliant young man of the Western Han. In his twenties he was given high posts by Emperor Wen, but rivals pushed him out, and he was sent away to Changsha. According to the "Records of the Grand Historian", a few years later the emperor called him back and met him in the Xuanshi Hall. The emperor had been thinking about spirits, so he asked Jia Yi where ghosts and spirits come from. They talked until midnight, and the emperor kept leaning forward on his mat without noticing. Li Shangyin wrote this poem from that story. We do not know when.

The poet作者

Li Shangyin (about 813–about 858) was a great late-Tang poet. With Du Mu he was called "the Little Li and Du". He was very gifted, but all his life he was caught between two warring court factions and never got to use his talent. So writing about Jia Yi, he was also writing about his own frustration of being gifted but unused.

The mood意境

This poem lifts you up and then lets you down. The first two lines seem to praise: the emperor seeks wise men and calls Jia Yi in himself, and Jia Yi is matchless. We think he will finally be put to good use. Then line three turns with "what a pity". At midnight the emperor leans in, as if he cares deeply. The last line reveals the truth. He does not ask how to run the country or help the people live well. He asks about ghosts. The word "ask" appears twice. "Not asking about the people" and "asking about ghosts" sit side by side, and the contrast is sharp. One line shows both the emperor's foolishness and the waste of a great talent.
