Background

Yuanxi is the Lantern Festival, the night of the fifteenth of the first month, when people look at lanterns, enjoy the moon and guess riddles. This lyric is usually thought to have been written while Xin Qiji was in Lin'an, today's Hangzhou, the capital of the Southern Song, around the mid-1170s. The exact year is debated. By then the Song held only the south, yet the capital was full of merrymaking. Xin Qiji longed to win back the north, but he was not given an important role.

The poet作者

Xin Qiji (1140–1207), courtesy name You'an, also called Jiaxuan, came from Licheng, today's Jinan in Shandong. When he was born, the north was already ruled by the Jin. In his twenties he joined a band fighting the Jin, and later came south to the Song. All his life he wanted to win back the north, but he was often pushed aside. He was a great poet of the bold style, and is named together with Su Shi as "Su and Xin".

The mood意境

The first stanza shows the whole town celebrating. The lanterns are like a thousand trees in bloom, the fireworks like a rain of stars. Fine carriages fill the roads, and flutes, lights and dragon lanterns go on all night. The second stanza first shows the women out to see the lanterns, dressed up and laughing as they pass. But the person "I" am looking for is not among them. He searches the crowd again and again. Then he turns around and finds her standing alone in a corner where the lights are dim. The busier the scene before, the quieter this moment feels. Many readers think the one who stays away from the crowd, alone in a quiet place, is also like Xin Qiji himself. The scholar Wang Guowei even compared the last lines to the final stage of achieving something great: after a long, hard search, you suddenly find it.
