The corpus text has no preface, and line nine reads "the free and easy place" instead of "the place where the wind and rain roared". The textbook and usual text have the latter, followed here. The textbook also prints a short preface: "On the seventh day of the third month, we were caught in rain on the road to Shahu. The rain gear had been sent ahead, and my companions were all in a sorry state, but I alone did not mind. Soon it cleared, so I wrote this lyric."

Background

On the seventh day of the third month of 1082, Su Shi was in his third spring of banishment in Huangzhou. He and some friends went to Shahu to look at farmland and were caught in a heavy rain on the way. The people carrying the rain gear had gone ahead, and everyone else was soaked and miserable. Only Su Shi did not mind at all. Soon the sky cleared, and he wrote this lyric. He had been banished to Huangzhou because of the Crow Terrace poetry case, in which he nearly lost his life.

05

The poet作者

Su Shi (1037–1101), also called Su Dongpo, was a great writer of the Northern Song. He was thrown into prison for poems that criticized new government policies. After his release he was banished to Huangzhou as a minor official with no real power. There he farmed a piece of wasteland himself and named himself Dongpo, the Eastern Slope. Life was hard, but he grew more and more at peace, and this lyric shows that state of mind.

06

The mood意境

This lyric is about a rainstorm, but really it is about how to face the storms of life. Rain beats on the woods and everyone runs, but Su Shi says: never mind it, sing and walk on slowly. A bamboo stick and straw sandals are lighter than a horse, and "who's afraid?" rings out strongly. He is thinking not only of this rain but of his whole life: even if I walk through wind and rain in a straw cape all my days, let it be. In the second half the rain stops, a cold wind sobers him, and the setting sun on the hilltop comes to greet him. At last he looks back. Where the storm raged a moment ago, there is nothing now. "Neither wind and rain nor clear sky" means: once the heart is calm, neither bad things nor good things can shake me.
