This poem is about stillness, yet it is full of small movements. Osmanthus flowers falling make almost no sound, yet the poet senses them. That tells us how calm his heart is and how quiet the night is. The hills feel empty, as if nothing were there. Then the moon rises. Its light shines in, the birds wake as if it were morning, and they call a few times in the ravine. Moonlight makes no sound, yet it wakes the birds, so the hills must be utterly silent. After the few calls, the hills feel even quieter than before. This is using movement to show stillness. Try closing your eyes and picturing yourself in the hills on a spring night, hearing those few bird calls.
