Background

Xiangji Temple was a well-known Buddhist temple south of the Tang capital, Chang'an. Wang Wei was a Buddhist and often visited temples and monks. This poem describes what he saw and heard on the way to the temple and beside it. The word guò in the title means to visit. The year is not known; it is usually thought to be from his middle years or later, while he lived near Chang'an.

The poet作者

Wang Wei (about 701–761), also called Mojie, was a great Tang poet and painter, and skilled in music too. He was a devoted Buddhist and is called the Buddha of Poetry. The Song writer Su Shi said there are paintings in his poems and poems in his paintings. His landscape poems are calm and airy, often with a Buddhist feeling, and this one is a fine example.

The mood意境

The poem is about a temple, yet it never shows the temple directly. It begins with "I did not know", as if he were wandering until he found himself among cloudy peaks. Ancient trees and an empty path: all is silent. Then a bell rings somewhere, and he knows the temple must be near. The most famous lines are about the spring and the sun. Spring water is usually cheerful, but against the big rocks its sound turns low and choked. Sunlight is usually warm, but among the thick pines it seems cold. Those two words, choked and cold, bring the deep stillness of the mountain to life. At last, by the pool, he thinks of calming his mind and driving out restless thoughts. The poem grows quieter and quieter, and when you finish, your own heart feels quiet too.
