Background

In 1079 Su Shi was reported for things he wrote in poems and thrown into prison. This is known as the Crow Terrace Poetry Case. After his release he was sent away to Huangzhou, today's Huanggang in Hubei. He wrote this lyric in 1082, when he lived at Lingao Pavilion by the Yangtze. One night he came home from drinking on the Eastern Slope, could not get in, and stood outside listening to the river. A Song-dynasty notebook adds that the next day people said Su Shi had sailed away. The governor was alarmed and rushed over, only to find him asleep at home.

The poet作者

Su Shi (1037–1101), also called Zizhan and known as Dongpo, was a great writer of the Northern Song. He was brilliant at poems, lyrics, essays, calligraphy and painting. He was sent away from court several times and lived hard lives, yet he always found a way to see things lightly. In his years at Huangzhou he wrote famous works such as "Remembering the Past at Red Cliff" and the "Red Cliff Rhapsody". This lyric is from the same time.

06

The mood意境

The first stanza is like a funny little story. He comes home at midnight. The servant snores like thunder, and no one answers the door. Someone else might get angry. Su Shi leans on his stick and quietly listens to the river instead. The second stanza grows out of that sound. In this world we are always pulled along by our cares. When can we let go? The night is deep, the wind has stopped, the river lies smooth. Suddenly he longs to take a little boat out onto the rivers and seas and live the rest of his life free. The lyric moves from something funny to something deep, and ends with a wish that is wide open and carefree.
