Background

This ci was written in the spring of 1082. Su Shi had been sent away in disgrace to Huangzhou after a court case over his poems. There he fell ill, so he went to Qishui (today's Xishui in Hubei) to see a famous doctor, Pang Anchang. When he got better, the two of them visited Qingquan Temple. Beside the temple ran the Lan Stream, which flowed west. Most rivers in China flow east, so the west-flowing stream moved Su Shi, and he wrote this ci. A short note before it says: visiting Qingquan Temple at Qishui; the temple stands by the Lan Stream, and the stream flows west.

The mood意境

The first half paints a fresh little picture of spring. Tender orchid shoots soak in the stream. The sandy path in the pines is washed clean by rain. In the evening drizzle a cuckoo calls. The cuckoo's call usually makes people sad, but the second half suddenly turns around. Seeing the stream flow west, Su Shi says: who says we cannot be young again? Even water can flow backward! The last line cheers up himself and others: do not sigh just because your hair is white. These strong words come from a man who had just been ill and was living through bad times, and they show the sunshine in his heart.
