Background

This was a popular song lyric in the Tang dynasty, and no one knows who wrote it. In his poem about Du Qiuniang, Du Mu wrote that this singing girl once sang "The Gold-Thread Robe" at a feast. Later the famous collection "Three Hundred Tang Poems" listed it under her name, so many people think she wrote it. Most likely she was only the singer. Another view says it was a folk song that people of the time all sang.

The poet作者

The writer is unknown. The name linked to this poem, Du Qiuniang, was a singing girl from Jinling, today's Nanjing. At fifteen she became a concubine of the regional governor Li Qi, and later entered the imperial palace. Her life had many ups and downs, and she was poor and alone in old age. The story of her singing this song survived because of Du Mu's poem.

The mood意境

This poem is like an older person kindly giving you advice. The first two lines both begin with "I urge you". Don't care only about fine robes; care about your young years. A robe can be made again, but once youth is gone it never comes back. The last two lines use a picture. When the flowers are in bloom, go and pick them. If you wait until they fall, all you get is a bare branch. Imagine someone standing under a tree, looking at the empty branches, sorry that they came too late. The words are very plain, and the lines repeat like a song, so you remember them after a few readings. The message: a good chance will not wait for you forever.
