The source text writes the cup in line two with the older form of the character. Most common editions use the later form. Both mean a wine cup, so the meaning is the same.

Background

These two poems are usually dated to 835. Du Mu was serving in Yangzhou and was about to leave for the capital, Chang'an. In Yangzhou he had grown close to a young singing girl. Before leaving, he wrote these two poems for her. The first praises her beauty. This one tells of the sadness of their last night together.

The poet作者

Du Mu (803–about 852), also called Muzhi, was a late Tang poet. He and Li Shangyin are known together as the "Little Li and Du". He was especially good at seven-character quatrains, with fresh words and true feeling. As a young man he lived in Yangzhou for several years and left many poems about the city and about parting.

The mood意境

The first line sounds strange: the deeper the love, the more it looks like no love at all. But it is true. When people are very sad, they often cannot speak or even show it on their faces. The second line goes on: at the farewell dinner he wants to smile, so she will not be too sad, but he just cannot. In the last two lines the poet stops talking about himself and turns to the candle on the table. A candle has a wick, which in Chinese sounds like heart. As it burns, wax runs down like tears. The candle stays with them all night and cries for them until morning. The people cannot cry, so the candle cries for them. This stays in the mind longer than simply saying "I am very sad".
