The source lists this as the second of "Five Palace Poems", with the last line ending in "near the Silver River". Common editions such as "Three Hundred Tang Poems" call it "Palace Poem" and end the line with "near the autumn river". The two words for crystal are the same thing, and the autumn river is the Milky Way on an autumn night.

Background

This is a palace lament. Such poems are about women in the palace, especially those the emperor no longer favored, and their loneliness and hurt. Many Tang poets wrote them. We do not know in which year this one was written. The poet uses the eyes and ears of a lady who has lost favor to show the contrast between the noisy fun elsewhere and her own quiet room.

The poet作者

Gu Kuang, also called Buweng, was a Tang poet. His exact dates are unclear; he lived around the eighth century. He served as an official and later lived as a hermit on Mount Mao. He was much older than Bai Juyi. Legend says that when young Bai Juyi brought him poems, Gu Kuang joked that rice in Chang'an was expensive and living there was not easy, playing on the name Juyi. After reading the poems, he praised them highly.

The mood意境

There are two places in this poem. On one side is the tall jade tower, with endless music and laughter drifting on the wind. That is where the favored ones are having fun. On the other side is a cold hall in the moonlight. No music, no voices, only the water clock dripping drop by drop. If she can hear the drips, it must be very quiet, and she must be lying awake all night. At last she rolls up the curtain and sees the Milky Way close in front of her. The stars are so near, but the emperor is so far. Another reading says the last two lines still describe the jade tower, so tall that rolling up its curtain brings you close to the stars. Either way, the poet never says she is unhappy. He just puts the noise and the silence side by side, and lets us feel her loneliness ourselves.
