Background

The Midnight Song was a folk tune from the Wu region in the south. Legend says a woman named Ziye of the Jin dynasty made it. Later people wrote Midnight Songs for the four seasons. Li Bai wrote four too, and this is the first, the spring song. Its story comes from the Han folk song "Mulberry by the Road": lovely Luofu picks mulberry leaves by the road, a prefect takes a liking to her, and she turns him down. No one knows exactly when Li Bai wrote this poem.

The poet作者

Li Bai (701–762) was a great Tang poet, often called the Immortal of Poetry. He loved folk songs and old Yuefu tunes, and often wrote new poems under old titles. His language flows naturally. Like this poem, his lines read as lightly as a song.

The mood意境

The first four lines are like a bright spring picture. Green water, green mulberry branches, a pair of white hands, and red clothes that dazzle in the sun. Green, white and red make the scene glow. In the last two lines the girl speaks: "My silkworms are hungry, I must go. Please do not waste your time here." Her words are polite, but her meaning is firm. Calmly, she uses her work as a reason and turns the official away with ease. In just thirty characters we meet a girl who is lovely, hard-working and sure of her own mind.
