Background创作背景

This lyric is about longing and sorrow at the end of spring. The speaker is usually read as a woman, though some think it is the poet himself. She fears spring is leaving, and she misses someone far away. He has sent many letters, but none says anything she can count on. The lyric does not tell us when or where it was written. The tune has three stanzas. The first two have exactly the same pattern, and the third is longer, which is rare among Song lyrics.

这首词写的是暮春时节一个人的相思和愁苦。词里的“我”一般理解为一位女子，一说是作者自己。她怕春天过去，又想念远方的人，那人寄来很多信，却没有一句确定的话。词中没有写明是哪一年、在哪里写的。这个词牌分三段，前两段的句式完全一样，第三段比较长，在宋词里比较少见。

The poet作者

Yuan Quhua, courtesy name Xuanqing, came from Fengxin in Jiangxi. He was a Southern Song ci poet; his dates of birth and death are not known. He passed the imperial exam during the Shaoxing years of Emperor Gaozong and served as a county magistrate several times. His lyrics describe scenes with fine detail and deep feeling. He did not leave many works, and this is his best known.

袁去华，字宣卿，江西奉新人，南宋词人，生卒年不详。他在宋高宗绍兴年间考中进士，做过几任县官。他的词写景细致，感情深切，作品不算多，这首是他最有名的一首。

The mood意境

The first stanza is about the crab-apple flowers after the rain. Luckily the east wind stopped the rain, the flowers are still in bloom, and she wants to keep them. The second stanza is about the orioles and swallows. They call so urgently, as if they too fear that spring will leave. The two stanzas have exactly the same line lengths, like a song sung twice to the same tune, and the sadness grows deeper. In the third stanza it is past noon. She has just got up and cannot be bothered to roll up the curtains; she only watches the willow fluff fly about. She secretly gives her tears to the river and asks it to carry a message to the one far away: look how worn I have become. Then she thinks of all his letters. Apart from polite words, there was not a single promise, and she grows sadder still. The last line shows only a scene: the sun sinks, and a thousand hills go dark. The scene holds all the pain she cannot put into words.
