In the usual text line three has lù lú, a well pulley, and line five ends with hóng mián lěng, the red silk padding is cold. The source text turned the pulley word into rare characters and wrote the end of line five with look-alike characters. These are copying or conversion slips, so we follow the usual text.

Background

The title is Setting Out at Dawn. The poem shows two lovers parting just before daybreak. It moves from the end of the night and her waking, to their holding hands and saying goodbye, to the traveler going off into the distance. It does not say when or where it was written, and no reliable record tells us.

His poems follow the rules of sound closely, use elegant words, and are careful and detailed. He deeply influenced later Southern Song poets and was called the Du Fu of ci. He was especially good at writing about partings.

The mood意境

This poem is like a series of film shots, moving forward step by step in time. First the moon is so bright it startles the crows. Then the water clock runs low and the well pulley creaks, telling us dawn is near. The sounds wake her, though in truth she never slept. Her eyes are bright and her pillow is wet with tears. The second half is the parting. They hold hands in the cold wind. The one leaving cannot make himself go, and neither can bear to hear the goodbyes. At the end the camera pulls back. From the tower she sees the Dipper's handle lying across the sky. The dew is cold, he goes farther and farther, and only the roosters' crowing is left. Not one line cries out that they are sad, yet every picture is full of the pain of letting go.
