Background

A short note before this ci says that on the twenty-fourth day of the twelfth month in the seventh year of Yuanfeng, Su Shi visited South Hill with Liu Qianshu of Sizhou. By the Western calendar that was early 1085. Su Shi had just left Huangzhou, where he had been sent in disgrace for years, and was ordered to move to Ruzhou. After a long journey, at the end of the year he reached Sizhou, near today's Xuyi in Jiangsu. With a local man, Liu Qianshu, he went to South Hill, drank tea and ate a spring plate outdoors, and wrote this ci. Little is known about Liu Qianshu.

The mood意境

The first half shows the scenery along the way. In the morning there is fine rain and slanting wind, a little cold. Then the sky clears. In the pale mist the willows are thin and sparse, and the riverbank looks especially lovely. Far off, the clear Luo stream joins the Huai River, and the water grows wider and wider. The second half is about food and drink. White foam floats in the tea bowl, and the plate holds tender shoots of wild greens that have just come up. None of it is costly, but all of it is fresh and clean. The last line is the heart of the ci: the best flavor in the world is this plain, simple joy. A man who has lived through great storms knows how to feel content with a bowl of tea and a plate of greens.
